What you’ll experience
If the Geirangerfjord is the most famous fjord, the Nærøyfjord is the most dramatic to sail through. This two-hour cruise from Flåm carries you along a narrow branch of the great Sognefjord that closes in to just 250 metres wide, hemmed by mountain walls rising up to 1,700 metres almost sheer from the water. It is a UNESCO World Heritage fjord, and from the deck you understand instantly why.
The boat leaves the busy little railway village of Flåm and sails first down the Aurlandsfjord before turning into the Nærøyfjord proper. As the walls close in, waterfalls streak down on both sides, tiny farms appear on the few green shelves, and the light shifts constantly as the sun moves behind the peaks. In spring the meltwater roars; in autumn the slopes turn gold; in the calm of a still morning the mountains mirror perfectly in the black water.
Many services now use modern electric or hybrid vessels, so you glide almost silently — no engine drone, just the sound of the waterfalls and the wind. That silence is the point: the Nærøyfjord is a place to be quiet in. The boats have open decks and heated indoor lounges, and the crew point out the landmarks, from the huddled village of Bakka to the delta at Gudvangen where the fjord finally opens out.
The cruise ends at Gudvangen, from where you can continue by bus over the Stalheim road or return to Flåm — many travellers pair it with the famous Flåm Railway to make a classic round trip. Boardable from both Flåm and Gudvangen, this is one of the great short journeys of Norway: two hours that concentrate everything spectacular about the western fjords into a single, silent glide between the mountains.

Price & season
The Nærøyfjord is cruised year-round from Flåm and Gudvangen, but the core sightseeing season runs May to September, when daylight is long and the waterfalls full. Summer is peak and busiest; May and September are quieter with dramatic light; winter sailings are stark and beautiful but on a reduced schedule.
Prices are indicative “from” fares per adult in Norwegian kroner and are confirmed at the time of booking. The final price depends on your travel date, group size and season.
Frequently asked questions
- How narrow is the Nærøyfjord?
- At its tightest the Nærøyfjord closes to about 250 metres wide, with mountain walls rising up to 1,700 metres almost vertically from the water. It is one of the narrowest navigable fjord arms in the world.
- Can I combine the cruise with the Flåm Railway?
- Yes. The classic round trip pairs the Flåm Railway with the Nærøyfjord cruise. Many travellers take the train to Flåm, cruise to Gudvangen and return by bus, or reverse the loop.
- Are the boats really electric?
- Many of the modern vessels on this route are electric or hybrid, so they run almost silently — you hear the waterfalls and wind rather than an engine, which suits the quiet of this UNESCO fjord.
- Where does the cruise start and end?
- It runs between Flåm and Gudvangen and can be boarded in either direction. From Gudvangen there are onward bus connections; from Flåm you can link with the railway.
