Bareboat Charter in Norway

Bareboat Charter in Norway

Self-skippered sailing yachts for licensed, experienced crews — what’s required, what’s included, and how to provision for a week among the fjords.

A bareboat charter puts you in command. You take the helm of a sailing yacht without a professional skipper aboard, plan your own route through the fjords, and run the boat as your own for the length of the charter — typically a week from Saturday to Saturday. It is the freest, most immersive way to sail Norway, and also the most demanding: you are the captain, responsible for navigation, weather calls and the safety of your crew. That freedom is why bareboat remains the enduring favourite of experienced sailors.

Norwegian and international operators require proof of competence before they hand over the keys. Expect to show an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) or an equivalent national skipper licence, a sailing résumé listing your logged miles and comparable yachts handled, and often a VHF radio operator’s certificate. A refundable security deposit — held against damage or loss — is standard and typically covers the boat’s excess; a damage-waiver option can reduce it. If your paperwork or experience falls short, a skippered charter is the straightforward alternative, and we’ll advise honestly on which route fits your crew.

What’s included varies by operator but a bareboat week generally covers the yacht, its standard inventory (safety gear, dinghy, navigation electronics, bedding and galley kit) and a full technical briefing at handover. Fuel, final cleaning, marina fees en route and provisioning are usually extra. Provision before you leave the base city — supermarkets thin out fast once you’re among the fjords — and plan meals around the villages you’ll pass. Keep the VHF on the working channels, watch the marine forecast morning and evening, and build slack into your itinerary: Norwegian weather rewards the patient. A bareboat week starts from around 23,000 NOK (roughly €2,100) in the shoulder season, rising in peak summer.

When to charter
